This has been a game-changer for me. Thank you! I've long used email (including emails I send myself) as my to-do list, writing ideas list, reminders, and more. Which definitely has cluttered and stressed my mind. I used your principle and sorted everything into folders (and sub folders) that make sense for me, moved my lists to Reminders, and feel so much freer!
One of my goals for this year was to finally clean out my personal email inbox. At the start of the year I had 19,000 emails 🙈 I have gotten it down to 10,000 and I am making it a task to remove 500 emails each day. I know it will be a relief when it is finally done
I’ve been using inbox zero for years. It was a game changer. 😁. It was all going so well until I joined Substack 🤦♂️. Filters came to the rescue but now my Substack unread folder is the new source of stress! Time to declutter Substack !
I have ebb and flow on a zero inbox. Sometimes I get frustrated and toss everything out! I like the newsletter folder idea. I think that would solve most of the issue. Note the word issue - I.e. newsletters! 😂 Anyhow, I could set up three folders for the topic of newsletters I like and have gmail put them away upon receipt. A simple task to accomplish today! Thanks!
Yeah and ebb and flow isn't bad. Definitely not something to beat yourself up about, but hopefully a couple tweaks here and there can help with keeping it clean without too much overhead.
So Derek I can set up a filter or something that filters all the newsletters that come in from Substack to a certain tag in Gmail? Would I have to do that for each individual newsletter I subscribe to? I would think so, right? Since everybody uses different email addresses and stuff.
Actually most of the emails come from Substack.com so you can filter off those. You can also filter off of “get the app” or other key words that appear consistently in the footer. But I also tend to just add new subscriptions to my filter when I subscribe.

What I'd recommend: archive everything older than a month.
It'll be there in search if you ever need it.
Also try out getinboxzero.com.
I recommend continuing task management after labelling an email as To-do: https://www.leadinginproduct.com/p/how-to-manage-tasks-as-a-product
It’s in the small things really
